NUP row: Ranjita Shrestha suspends MP Ghanashyam Chaudhary

KATHMANDU: Ranjita Shrestha, President of Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP), has suspended Ghanashyam Chaudhary, a member of the Sudurpaschim Province Assembly, from the party.

In a letter addressed to the State Speaker Bhim Bahadur Bhandari on Friday, Shrestha informed of Chaudhary’s three-month suspension from the party.

The letter, bearing Chairman Shrestha’s signature, cited Chaudhary’s failure to participate in discussions on various party issues despite invitations, with his explanations deemed unsatisfactory.

The NUP has been embroiled in intense controversy lately, particularly between Ranjita and party patron Resham Chaudhary.

Ranjita has been expelling leaders aligned with Resham from the party, including MPs.

Currently, only five members remain in the Sudurpaschim Provincial Assembly, down from seven members affiliated with the party.

Earlier, Ranjita had removed Chaudhary as the leader of the state parliamentary party, assigning MP Kailash Chaudhary to the role.

Kailash Chaudhary is known to be a close ally of Shrestha, whereas Ghanashyam Chaudhary holds allegiance to Resham.

Adding to the turbulence, Shrestha also dismissed NUP Provincial Assembly Member Indira Giri by sending a letter on Tuesday.

Giri, a Proportional Member of Parliament, was recalled by the Speaker following a letter from her party. Giri is also aligned with Resham.
