Transportation disrupted on Karnali Bridge as fire damages 14 support wires

KAILALI: Transportation on the Karnali Bridge has come to a standstill following a fire that partially damaged 14 support wires, prompting safety concerns.

A specialized technical team advised the authorities against allowing vehicle traffic on the bridge until a thorough inspection is conducted, as reported by the Road Division Office in Nepalgunj.

Engineer Niraj Shakya, representing the Division Office, confirmed that vehicular movement on the bridge has been suspended for the time being. “We visited the site of the incident last night, and another technical team is expected to arrive today for further assessment,” he stated.

Police Inspector Hariram Dangi from the Area Police Office in Chisapani urged all drivers to follow alternative traffic routes due to the closure of the regular route.

Vehicles traveling from Sudurpaschim Province to the federal capital Kathmandu and other provinces are advised to utilize the route via Bardiya and Nepalgunj, passing through the Sattipur Bridge.

The incident occurred when a truck (Na 5 Kha 5297) traveling west suddenly caught fire while crossing the Karnali Bridge on Monday afternoon.

The fire from the truck subsequently spread to the construction wires of the bridge, causing alarm among bystanders.
