LAS VEGAS: Chiefs emerged victorious over the 49ers with a thrilling 25-22 win in overtime during Super Bowl 2024.

The closely contested match saw the teams tied at 19 at the end of regulation. In the extra period, Niners took a brief 22-19 lead with a 27-yard field goal by Jake Moody.

However, Patrick Mahomes, displaying his familiar resilience, orchestrated a game-winning drive, connecting with Mecole Hardman on a one-yard touchdown pass with just 13 seconds left in overtime.

This secured the Chiefs their third Super Bowl title in the last five seasons, solidifying their status as a football dynasty.

Mahomes credited the defense for keeping them in the game, while tight end Travis Kelce expressed gratitude for achieving the goal of three Super Bowls.

This marked only the second Super Bowl to go into overtime, the first being in 2017.

The Chiefs, initially considered underdogs, continued their underdog narrative throughout the playoffs, defeating the Ravens and the Bills.

Super Bowl LVIII was a rematch of the 2020 Super Bowl, where the Chiefs triumphed over the Niners.

Andy Reid, the Chiefs’ head coach, maintained his undefeated record against Niners coach Kyle Shanahan.

The victory also extended the 49ers’ Super Bowl drought to 30 years.

Turnovers played a significant role in the game, with both teams making crucial mistakes, particularly in ball security.

The Niners took an early lead with a 55-yard field goal and a trick play resulting in a touchdown, while the Chiefs struggled to score.

However, the Chiefs gradually closed the gap, with Butker breaking a Super Bowl record with a 57-yard field goal.

Mahomes overcame interceptions and led the Chiefs to tie the game at various points, eventually forcing overtime.

The game, aired on CBS and Nickelodeon, was played at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, and CBS Sports provided comprehensive coverage.
