National Planning Commission seeks local data on food systems transformation efforts

KATHMANDU: The National Planning Commission (NPC) has begun coordinating with local governments to collect information on efforts and achievements made in implementing Nepal’s Food Systems Transformation Strategic Plan.

The Commission said it has requested the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation, Federal Affairs and General Administration to facilitate the process and ensure that all local governments submit the required information.

According to the NPC, implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 is a shared responsibility of the federal, provincial and local governments, and the Food Systems Transformation Strategic Plan is being implemented in line with that commitment.

The strategic plan covers a wide range of areas, including food production and consumption, nutrition, food safety, agricultural infrastructure, agricultural value chains and climate-resilient farming systems. The Commission said the plan serves as a key policy document supporting Nepal’s efforts to achieve the SDGs.

The NPC said a meeting of the National Steering Committee formed under the strategic plan on July 6 directed all ministries, government tiers and concerned agencies to align their policies, programmes and activities for the upcoming fiscal year with the strategy.

The committee also instructed agencies to regularly submit updates on implementation efforts and achievements to the Steering Committee Secretariat, which is housed at the National Planning Commission.

The Commission said consolidated reports from local governments are required to be submitted regularly to the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub. It has therefore asked all local governments to provide the required information in the prescribed format for onward submission.
