Breakthrough in Nagdhunga Tunnel route soon

KATHMANDU: The Nagdhunga tunnel route is on the verge of a breakthrough, with a mere 73.60 meters remaining to be completed.

The tunnel, spanning 2.55 kilometers, achieved a breakthrough milestone in August 2023.

Currently, 51% of the concrete work within the tunnel is finished, and preparations are underway to address tunnel facilities upon completion of the construction tasks.

The primary tunnel, stretching 2,688 meters, is a pivotal component of the Nagdhunga Tunnel Construction Project—the first of its kind in Nepal.

The project aims to enhance the road conditions around the Nagdhunga pass, fostering a seamless transportation network and boosting commercial activities between Kathmandu and other cities in Nepal.

The anticipated benefits include time savings, reduced petroleum consumption, and a decrease in air pollution.

Construction commenced in October 2019, with an expected completion date set for April 2024.

Ramesh Prasad Koirala, the project’s engineer, highlighted the need for two megawatts of electricity for power supply and other tools.

A 24-hour dedicated power supply is slated to be sourced from the 11KVA transmission station of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).

Despite the project’s progress, disputes over compensation for land acquisition have led to delays in construction.

The resolution of compensation-related issues has become a key demand for certain locals, further extending the construction timeline.
