Rabi warns PM: Ousting Deputy Speaker can be detrimental

KATHMANDU: Chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Rabi Lamichhane, has urged Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to refrain from taking steps to remove the Deputy Speaker, describing such a move as a “suicide goal.”

In a statement to the media on Wednesday, Lamichhane revealed that he met with Prime Minister Oli to inquire about the ongoing discussions concerning the Deputy Speaker.

He conveyed his concern that removing the Deputy Speaker would be detrimental to the ruling parties.

Lamichhane highlighted that the votes from Nepali Congress and CPN-UML represent only 30 percent of the eligible voters, while 70 percent are represented by other parties, including RSP.

He emphasized that a 30 percent faction should not challenge the 70 percent majority, labeling the effort as a “suicide goal.”

“If you are thinking of scoring a goal on your own post, what more can I say?” he remarked.

He further warned that removing the Deputy Speaker would be a mistake, urging the government, which holds two-thirds of the power, to focus on other priorities and not misuse their authority.

“I received various reports from the Prime Minister about the Deputy Speaker. Since responses are inconsistent, I needed to understand the reality of the situation. I met with him to discuss it and advised him that this action is incorrect,” Lamichhane said.

“The government with two-thirds power has many priorities, and it’s crucial to use that power wisely. This approach is wrong and potentially fatal. The Prime Minister indicated that he is in discussions and will also consult with the Nepali Congress,” Lamichhane added.
