PM Oli invites Indian PM Modi for official visit to Nepal
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has extended an invitation to his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, for an official visit to Nepal. PM Oli conveyed the invitation through Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who is currently on an official visit to Nepal. The invitation was discussed during a meeting between PM Oli and Secretary Misri at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar on Sunday.
Ten injured by lightning strike in Kailali
Ten people were injured by a lightning strike in Uttarmuda, Bardagoriya Rural Municipality, Kailali district, on Sunday. The injured individuals include Phariya Devi Chaudhary, Rita Devi Chaudhary, Maya Chaudhary, Kamalapati Chaudhary, Kiran Chaudhary, Urmila Dagaura, Parbati Chaudhary, Phul Kumari Chaudhary, and Nirmala Devi Tharu from Uttarmuda. Additionally, Mamata Tharu from Dhusara, Ghodaghodi Rural Municipality-2, was also injured, according to the District Police Office, Kailali.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met with Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba at his office in Budhanilkantha. Secretary Misri is currently in Kathmandu on an official visit, following an invitation from Nepal’s Foreign Secretary, Sewa Lamsal. The discussion between Misri and Deuba centered on strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
Health Minister Paudel unveils work plan to strengthen Nepal’s health sector
Minister for Health and Population, Pradip Paudel, has unveiled a comprehensive work plan aimed at improving Nepal’s health sector. The plan is designed to meet the targets set by the 16th Plan and the Sustainable Development Goals, according to Minister Paudel. He presented the plan during a press conference at Singha Durbar on Sunday. However, many of the initiatives outlined in the plan are continuations or expansions of previous plans and announcements.
Former Minister and 10 others arrested for gambling in Kathmandu
Police have arrested 11 individuals, including former Koshi Province Minister and lawmaker Buddi Kumar Raj Bhandari, in Gaurighat, Kathmandu Metropolitan-8 on Saturday. A team from the Gaushala Police Circle apprehended them on charges of gambling. In addition to Bhandari, those arrested include Uttam Prasad Rai, Bir Bahadur Rai, Anish Tamang, Thula Tamang, Deepak Khadka, Purushottam Sharma, Bhim Bahadur Sambahamphe, Rabi Shrestha, Raju Mahat, and Madhev Thapa. Lawmaker Bhandari previously served as the Social Development Minister of Koshi Province.

Court extends Bechan Jha’s custody by four days
The Kathmandu District Court has extended the custody of Bechan Jha by four more days to allow for further investigation. A bench led by Judge Mahendra Raj Kafle granted the police permission to keep Jha in custody as they continue their probe into his involvement in the fake Bhutanese refugee scam. Jha, who had been on the run, was arrested from Kanchanpur on June 28. He is accused of acting as a mediator, facilitating meetings between brokers and high-ranking officials, including the Home Minister and the Secretary.

Nepal’s Santoshi Shrestha secured the 79th position in the Women’s Marathon at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Shrestha completed the marathon in 2 hours, 55 minutes, and 06 seconds. Earlier, she had won a gold medal at the Bangabandhu Marathon in Dhaka, finishing with a time of 2 hours, 46 minutes, and 22 seconds.
NEPSE index soars to 2,860.91 points with historic turnover of Rs. 25.77 billion
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) Index on Sunday surged dramatically, closing at 2,860.91 points—a notable increase of 94.53 points or 3.41 percent from the previous session. This follows a smaller gain of 6.70 points in the last trading day, indicating a strong upward trend. The index started at 2,780.09 points and saw fluctuations throughout the day, peaking at 2,860.96 points and dipping to a low of 2,779.24 points before ending at its closing level. The trading session was marked by high activity, with 330 stocks exchanged in 275,207 transactions, totaling a record-breaking turnover of Rs. 25.77 billion.
NEA halves electricity leakage over eight years
The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has successfully reduced electricity leakage from its distribution networks and transmission lines by half over the past eight years. According to the NEA, electricity leakage, which was at 25.78 percent in the fiscal year 2072/73 BS, has been brought down to 12.73 percent in the fiscal year 2080/81 BS. Currently, leakage in transmission lines stands at 3.33 percent, while leakage in distribution networks is at 9.40 percent. Eight years ago, these figures were 5.98 percent and 19.80 percent, respectively.
State Affairs Committee summons Home Minister, Chief Secretary, and CIAA Chief for discussion
The State Affairs Committee under the House of Representatives has summoned Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, Chief Secretary Liladevi Gadtaula, and Chief of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority for a meeting. Scheduled for August 15, the Committee will discuss the proposed amendments to the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2059. Chairman of the Committee, Ramhari Khatiwada, confirmed that officials from CIAA have also been called to the meeting.
Gold price up by Rs 700 per tola today
Gold price has increased by Rs 700 per tola in the domestic market today. According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, fine gold is priced at Rs 148,800 per tola today. On Friday, fine gold was traded at Rs 148,100 per tola. Meanwhile, the price of silver has been fixed at Rs 1,720 per tola.
Maoist leader Janardhan proposes leadership overhaul
Maoist Center Deputy General Secretary Janardhan Sharma has proposed a significant shift in party leadership. Sharma has suggested that the party’s leadership should be transferred to the “third generation” while Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda retaining his role as a guardian figure. To facilitate this transition, Sharma has proposed dissolving the current central committee and forming a conference organizing committee chaired by Chairman Prachanda. This committee would oversee the election of new leadership through a direct voting process. Sharma presented this proposal during a Standing Committee meeting last week, accompanied by a 14-page document.

Singer Prakash Timilsina passes away
Singer Prakash Timilsina has passed away. Lalitpur Police Spokesperson Nareshraj Subedi stated that Timilsina was found dead in his room at Adinath Marg, Lalitpur Metropolitan City. According to Subedi, Timilsina was found dead in his bed around 9 pm on Saturday. His body has been taken to Patan Hospital for a post-mortem. Timilsina, known for popular songs such as ‘Priya Timro siundoma bharna deu’, ‘Timro haatko sindoor’, ‘Jun dhandina’, ‘Naman laj yesari’, and ‘Na Aaye ni hunthyo’, first gained prominence through the singing competition ‘Nepali Tara’.
Baglung landslide displaces 50 families
A landslide and subsequent flooding have displaced 50 families in Badigad, Baglung. The affected families are from Nayabasti in Badigad Rural Municipality-9 and Ward No. 10, including areas such as Arupata, Patale, Khor, Salledhara, and other nearby settlements. This disaster follows a recent landslide that claimed 11 lives, with one person still unaccounted for. The displaced families are facing significant challenges, as both water and electricity supplies have been disrupted. The situation is particularly dire for children and the elderly.
