NEA halves electricity leakage over eight years

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has successfully reduced electricity leakage from its distribution networks and transmission lines by half over the past eight years.

According to the NEA, electricity leakage, which was at 25.78 percent in the fiscal year 2072/73 BS, has been brought down to 12.73 percent in the fiscal year 2080/81 BS.

Currently, leakage in transmission lines stands at 3.33 percent, while leakage in distribution networks is at 9.40 percent.

Eight years ago, these figures were 5.98 percent and 19.80 percent, respectively.

The NEA’s efforts have seen a consistent reduction in leakage rates: 22.90 percent in FY 2073/74, 20.45 percent in FY 2074/75, 15.32 percent in FY 2075/76, 15.27 percent in FY 2076/77, 17.18 percent in FY 2077/78, 15.38 percent in FY 2078/79, and 13.46 percent in FY 2079/80.

The NEA reports that it earned Rs 12 billion through its leakage control measures every year.

The authority now aims to further reduce the leakage to a single-digit percentage.
