T20 WC: Nepal looking to bounce back against Sri Lanka

KATHMANDU: In their second group stage match, Nepal is set to clash with Sri Lanka in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Wednesday.

The match will be played at Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida, at 5:15 AM Nepali time.

Both teams are currently pointless on the scorecard, with Nepal having played one game and Sri Lanka two.

Nepal suffered a six-wicket defeat against the Netherlands, while Sri Lanka lost by six wickets to South Africa in their first match and by two wickets to Bangladesh in their second match.

This will be the first time Test nation Sri Lanka and Nepal face each other, with both teams eager to secure their first win in the World Cup matches.

Group D Path to the Second Round

Group D Teams: South Africa, Bangladesh, Netherlands, Nepal, Sri Lanka

South Africa (6 points | 0.603 NRR):
The Proteas secured a key win against Sri Lanka and followed it with a close victory over the Netherlands.

Their strong bowling attack helped them clinch another tight finish against Bangladesh, putting South Africa on the brink of qualification.

Bangladesh (2 points | 0.075 NRR):
The Tigers started Group D with a narrow win over Sri Lanka, placing them in the second position.

Despite missing a chance in a thriller against South Africa in New York, they are still in a good position to qualify. Assuming Sri Lanka fails to catch up, Bangladesh likely only needs to beat their main qualification rivals, the Netherlands, in their next match.

Even a win over Nepal in their final game might be enough to secure a spot based on net run rate (NRR).

Netherlands (2 points | 0.024 NRR):
With one win from two matches, the Dutch need to beat Bangladesh and likely Nepal as well to advance.

It’s a challenging path, but qualification is still within reach for the Netherlands.

Nepal (0 points | –0.539 NRR):
Nepal’s loss to the Netherlands makes their path difficult, but with three matches remaining, anything is possible.

To advance, they’ll likely need to win all their remaining games, a tough task considering they will be underdogs in each match.

Sri Lanka (0 points | –0.777 NRR):
Sri Lanka needs to win big against Nepal and the Netherlands first.

Then they need to hope for rain in Saint Vincent on June 13 to prevent the Bangladesh–Netherlands match from concluding.

While challenging, it’s not impossible for Sri Lanka to advance.
