FECOFUN urges govt for compensation and free treatment amid rising forest fires

KATHMANDU: The Federation of Community Forest Users, Nepal (FECOFUN), has called upon the government to provide compensation to the families of those who lost their lives in recent forest fires, along with free treatment for the injured.

In a press release issued today, FECOFUN expressed deep concerns regarding the escalating incidents of forest fires nationwide, which have resulted in loss of lives and property.

The federation attributed the rise in wildfires to factors such as decreased winter rainfall, rising temperatures, lack of public awareness, human negligence, and other contributing factors.

FECOFUN specifically highlighted the need for compensation for the victims of forest fires in various locations, including Masta community forest in Thulobheri municipality, Dolpa, Kalikot, Bhojpur, Dhankuta, and Lalitpur.

It also emphasized the importance of providing free treatment to those injured in these incidents.

The federation commended the efforts of community forest users in containing the fires and urged the government to implement stringent measures to prevent future incidents.

They stressed the importance of raising public awareness about the legal consequences of causing forest fires.

Notably, three Nepali army personnel lost their lives while attempting to control the fire in Thulobheri.

FECOFUN’s plea underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts between communities and the government to mitigate the devastating impact of forest fires and protect lives and livelihoods.
