Real Madrid inches closer to La Liga title with dominant victory over Celta Vigo

SPAIN: Real Madrid took a significant step towards reclaiming the La Liga title as they convincingly defeated Rafael Benitez’s Celta Vigo, reestablishing a commanding seven-point lead.

Despite the absence of the suspended Jude Bellingham, Madrid seized control in the first half, with Vinicius Jr finding the net from close range after his initial attempt was blocked by Celta keeper Vicente Guaita.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side dominated the opening half, earning a well-deserved lead. Although the hosts exhibited a dip in performance after the break, Celta failed to capitalize on the opportunity.

Madrid squandered chances through Rodrygo and Brahim Diaz before sealing the victory with three late goals in the final 11 minutes.

The first of these came from a set-piece, with Antonio Rudiger’s unmarked header hitting the bar and rebounding off former Crystal Palace keeper Guaita.

This breakthrough shattered Celta’s resistance, and moments later, a defensive mix-up led to the third goal.

Vinicius’ cross caused confusion between Guaita and Carlos Dominguez, resulting in the defender inadvertently redirecting the ball into his own net.

Turkish teenager Arda Guler marked his first Madrid goal by slotting in from a tight angle shortly after entering the game as a substitute.

Facing pressure from Girona and Barcelona, who had won earlier in the weekend, Madrid could not afford to slip up against relegation-threatened Celta.

Although the game seemed tense until the final half-hour, the three late goals eased the nerves and secured a crucial victory for Real Madrid.

The Bernabeu crowd, known for their high expectations, had shown signs of frustration during the second home game in five days.

This followed a less-than-impressive performance against RB Leipzig in the Champions League, where Madrid narrowly advanced to the quarter-finals.
