KATHMANDU: Sandeep Lamichhane, a cricketer convicted and sentenced to eight years in jail for his involvement in a rape case, has decided to step down from the National Cricket Team.
Following the verdict from the Kathmandu District Court, Lamichhane communicated his decision to the Cricket Association Nepal (CAN), expressing his intention not to continue his participation in the national team.
In a letter to CAN, Lamichhane urged the association to acknowledge his decision. He revealed his plan to appeal against the court’s decision in the high court and indicated his willingness to rejoin the team if declared innocent.
The Kathmandu District Court handed down an eight-year prison term to Sandeep Lamichhane, who was accused of rape.
Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal’s verdict also included a mandate for Lamichhane to compensate the victim with a sum of 500,000 rupees.
