KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairman Rabi Lamichhane reached the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Tuesday evening to discuss the ruling coalition’s ongoing efforts to remove Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar.

Ranamagar, a Member of Parliament from the RSP, is facing removal due to a signature campaign initiated by the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML to unseat her.

During the meeting, Lamichhane briefed Prime Minister KP Oli on the developments regarding the removal campaign.

In response, Prime Minister Oli dismissed the rumors, stating, “Nothing has happened like the rumors. Don’t run behind the rumors.”

The Prime Minister also indicated that no formal action had been taken concerning the Deputy Speaker’s removal, according to his Secretariat.

Despite this, the power-sharing parties have commenced their signature collection campaign as of Tuesday, aiming to submit the signatures of a majority of MPs at the House of Representatives meeting scheduled for Wednesday or Thursday.

The push to remove Deputy Speaker is rooted in her letter requesting a visa interview for a program in New York, USA.

This letter, coupled with her busy schedule, has fueled the ruling parties’ efforts to proceed with her removal.

The motivation behind this move appears to stem from dissatisfaction with the current Constitutional Council composition.

Both Prime Minister Oli and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba are concerned about their lack of majority influence in the Council.

The Constitutional Council, led by the Prime Minister, includes the Chief Justice, the Speaker, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Deputy Speaker.
