Surge in dengue and cholera cases across Nepal

KATHMANDU: The number of dengue and cholera cases in Nepal has seen a significant rise in recent weeks, according to the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division under the Ministry of Health and Population.

As of last Friday, the total number of dengue cases reached 3,084, with 722 new cases reported in just the past four days.

The mosquito-borne infection has spread across the country, with the exception of Mustang, Dolpa, Jumla, and Humla districts, according to Dr. Gokarna Prasad Dahal, Chief of the NTD and Vector Borne Disease Control Section.

Tanahu district has recorded the highest number of dengue cases, with 583 infections, followed by 307 cases in Kathmandu, 166 in Kaski, and 135 in Jhapa district.

In response to the rising number of cases, the Ministry has urged both public and private offices to launch ‘Larva Search and Destroy’ campaigns and to maintain strict hygiene and sanitation practices.

The government has also announced that dengue patients will receive free treatment at public healthcare facilities.

Cholera cases are also on the rise, with 47 cases detected across the country to date.

Dr. Dahal reported that cholera cases have been confirmed in Lalitpur, Kathmandu, Pyuthan, Kailali, and Rupandehi districts, with Lalitpur recording the highest number of cases (34) and Rupandehi the lowest (1).
