Monsoon tragedy: 80 dead, 5 missing in floods and landslides

KATHMANDU: Authorities have reported that the monsoon season has claimed the lives of 80 individuals due to floods, landslides, and other related incidents across various provinces.

According to Deputy Inspector General Dan Bahadur Karki, one fatality occurred in the Kathmandu Valley, 19 in Koshi Province, three in Madhes Province, four in Bagmati Province, 22 in Gandaki Province, 20 in Lumbini Province, four in Karnali Province, and seven in Sudurpaschim Province.

Currently, five people remain missing, and 97 others have been injured.

Search operations are underway for the missing individuals, while the injured are receiving medical treatment in local hospitals.

The police have successfully rescued 53 individuals from affected areas.

The injuries reported include three in the Kathmandu Valley, 21 in Koshi Province, five in Madhes Province, four in Bagmati Province, 26 in Gandaki Province, four in Lumbini Province, 15 in Karnali Province, and 10 in Sudurpaschim Province.

The disaster has also led to significant damage, with 161 houses inundated and 138 houses, 54 sheds, 41 bridges, a school, and two government offices suffering various degrees of damage due to flooding.

As of now, 2,764 families have been displaced from their homes by these calamities.
