Durga Prasai’s B&C Medical College gets KU’s affiliation

KATHAMANDU: B&C Medical College, owned by businessman Durga Prasai and located in Birtamod, Jhapa, has received affiliation from Kathmandu University.

As per a letter from the Executive Council meeting of Kathmandu University held on Monday, B&C Medical College will be officially named B&C Medical College Teaching Hospital and Research Center.

Kathmandu University granted the affiliation following a directive order from the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court’s division bench of Justices Dr. Kumar Chudal and Saranga Subedi issued a mandate to Kathmandu University, Kavrepalanchok, and the Medical Education Commission, Bhaktapur.

The full text of the March 25 decision was made public just a few days ago.

The Supreme Court also ordered the enforcement of standards set by the government 13 years ago.

On April 6, 2012, the government established standards and conditions for medical colleges.

In November 2016, the Nepal Medical Council conducted an on-site inspection, and Kathmandu University’s inspection team was instructed to ensure compliance.

B&C Medical College submitted an application to Kathmandu University for MBBS program approval and affiliation on February 26, 2017.

Following the implementation of the Medical Education Act, the college applied for affiliation with the commission in March 2020.

Despite having all necessary infrastructure in place, Durga Prasai filed a writ petition against Kathmandu University and the Medical Education Commission, among others, claiming that affiliation was not granted.

The Supreme Court subsequently issued an order in response to this petition.
