PATAN: Gagan Kumar Thapa, the General Secretary of the Nepali Congress, has argued that pre-election alliances are polluting politics.

He added that the recent formation of the ruling alliance is also a form of pre-election alliance.

Speaking at a function organized on the 8th establishment day of Godawari municipality in Lalitpur on Sunday, General Secretary Thapa expressed concerns about the lack of a majority for any party in the parliament.

He warned that if this trend continues, it could result in political leaders holding the parliament and government hostage to fulfill their vested interests.

Thapa emphasized the need for an electoral system to prevent further deterioration of politics.

He criticized the mixed electoral system, stating that it has been polluted and misused by political leaders to seize power.

Highlighting the negative impact of the flawed system on development, Thapa stressed the importance of effective public service delivery at the local level, which is the closest government to the people.

During the event, Min Krishna Maharjan, a member of the Bagmati Province Assembly, praised the Mayor of Godawari municipality for having a clear vision, goals, and a roadmap for development and prosperity.

Urmila Lama, another member of the Bagmati Province Assembly, commended Godawari municipality for its significant activities in education, health, agriculture, infrastructure, and tourism, laying a robust foundation for federalism.

Raghunath Maharjan, a speaker and member of the Bagmati Province Assembly, urged the municipality to focus on human and social development.

Chief of the District Coordination Committee, Rishi Dev Phunyal, complained that the federal and provincial governments had failed to allocate the budget according to the needs of local levels.

Mayor Gajendra Maharjan and Deputy Mayor Muna Adhikari assured that they would consider suggestions from all sides in carrying out their responsibilities.

Despite limited resources, they stated that they were pushing forward with development works.
