KATHMANDU: Nepal’s CPN (Maoist Center) is holding an office bearers’ meeting today to select a candidate for the upcoming National Assembly (NA) Chair election.
The meeting is scheduled for 5:00 PM this afternoon.
After forming a new coalition with CPN-UML, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP), and CPN (Unified Socialist Party), the Maoist Center secured the NA Chair position.
Party insiders report that Vice Chair Urmila Aryal, Narayan Dahal, and Jhakku Prasad Subedi are vying for the nomination.
However, Chairman and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal is likely to endorse Dahal as the party’s official candidate.
Meanwhile, the main opposition party, Nepali Congress, has also begun preparing for the election.
Before the Maoist Center severed its alliance with them, Nepali Congress was expected to nominate Krishna Prasad Sitaula.
Due to the recent political shift, the party has yet to make a formal decision.
Nominations for the NA Chair position are due on Monday, with the election itself taking place on Tuesday.
