Kathmandu District Court sentences Sandeep Lamichhane to 8 years in rape case

The Kathmandu District Court has sentenced cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane, accused of rape, to an 8-year prison term. Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal’s verdict also mandated him to compensate the victim with a sum of 500,000 rupees. The court had previously convicted Lamichhane and slated the announcement of the fine and sentence for January 10.

No cause for concern over Rs 20 crore investment agreement with India: PM

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda sought to allay concerns surrounding the recent Rs 20 crore investment agreement with India while addressing Law, Justice, and Human Rights Committee at Singha Durbar today. PM Dahal clarified that there is no provision for India to unilaterally choose and implement projects, ensuring a collaborative approach. He further assured that the project’s implementation would undergo regular monitoring, with updates provided by Nepal government institutes.

CBI reveals Ram Bahadur Bamjan after arrest in Kathmandu

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) unveiled details about Ram Bahadur Bamjan on Tuesday, following his arrest in the Hattigauda, Budhanilkantha area of the capital. In a press conference organized today, the CBI provided insights into the allegations Bamjan is facing, which include murder, causing the disappearance of followers, and engaging in sexual assault. Upon detaining Bamjan, the CBI conducted a thorough search of his residence, resulting in the confiscation of Rs 30,375,000.

India reluctant on power purchase from China-funded projects: PM

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has revealed that the Indian government is hesitant to purchase electricity generated by Hydro Power Projects directly funded by China. Speaking at a meeting of the Law, Justice, and Human Rights Committee on Wednesday, PM Dahal emphasized that the disagreement was conveyed by the Indian government, echoing the sentiments expressed by Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar during his recent visit to Nepal.

The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) finds itself in a state of chaos after Ambar Bahadur Bista took over as the Speaker of Koshi Province. This marks the second instance of the RPP experiencing internal discord over a Speaker appointment, the first being Bhuwan Pathak in Bagmati Province. The decision to appoint Bista has sparked opposition within the party, with members arguing that the RPP, which stands against republicanism and federalism, should not align itself with the existing governmental structure.

Govt asked to disclose details of Nepal-India agreement within seven days 

The Law, Justice, and Human Rights Committee has instructed the government to disclose details of the recently inked agreement between Nepal and its southern neighbor, India. During a convened meeting on Wednesday, where Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda was summoned, the Committee probed the Prime Minister for insights into the agreement, directing the government to present a detailed account within seven days. The focus of scrutiny lies on the High-impact Community Development Project Deal signed during the recent visit of Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar.

PM Dahal to attend Non-Aligned Movement Summit in Uganda

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda is scheduled to visit Uganda in the first week of January to participate in the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement member states. Government Spokesperson Rekha Sharma, briefing the media on the Cabinet’s decision on Wednesday, said that the Prime Minister will lead a Nepalese delegation at the Summit taking place on January 19-20.

NEPSE system to remain closed for three days for maintenance

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) system is going to be closed for three days for maintenance purposes. According to the information released on Wednesday, the trading system will be closed from Thursday, January 10 starting from 5 PM until 11 PM Saturday, January 13. NEPSE has informed about the temporary closure of the trading system to update its electrical system for maintenance purposes.

Community schools closed due to chilling cold

The community schools in Mahottari district are closing for four to eight days with the increase in cold. The local governments in the district have decided to close the schools after cold wave, thick fog and chilling condition started affecting life. The Jaleshwor, Manarasiswa, Bhangaha, Gaushala and Bardibas municipalities along with Pipara, Ekadara, Sonama and Samsi rural municipalities have closed all schools in their area.

201 lifters vie in the nation-wide weightlifting competition

A total of 201 lifters from all over the country are competing in the 26th male and 11th female weightlifting competition that kicked off in Madhyapur Thimi in Bhaktapur today. The competition organized by the Nepal Weightlifting Association has players representing from 21 districts, said Ram Krishna Shrestha, Chairperson of the Association. The estimated budget for the competition is Rs 8.6 million, informed the organizers.
