Govt to reassess SC’s 20-meter riverbank construction ban

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) KP Oli has said that the government will review the Supreme Court’s recent decision prohibiting the construction of structures within 20 meters of the riverbanks in Kathmandu.

Prime Minister Oli assured that the government will address the concerns of local residents and interest groups, including those raised by Suman Sayami, the coordinator of the Valley Road Expansion Victims’ Struggle Committee.

“We accept the decision of the honorable court,” said Oli. “Any judgment may have its flaws for various reasons. If the decision is not appropriate, the legal course is to review it. I believe the court will understand the people’s grievances and that justice will be served.”

During a meeting at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar, Oli emphasized the importance of national unity and cultural preservation.

He warned against elements that may threaten Nepali civilization and culture, urging vigilance to maintain national unity.

The controversy began after the Kathmandu Metropolitan Municipality issued a notification, following the Supreme Court’s decision, prohibiting construction within 20 meters of the riverbank.

The Committee has requested a review of this decision, arguing that its implementation would displace millions and jeopardize property protection.
