Department of Meteorology forecasts heat wave in Tarai, urges caution

KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a warning about a potential heat wave in the Tarai region, based on an analysis of the temperature conditions expected throughout the country in the coming days.

The Meteorological Forecasting Division has called for necessary preparedness and caution, as temperatures are likely to rise significantly.

Meteorologist Binu Maharjan indicated that the heat is expected to intensify particularly in the Tarai, as well as in the Sudurpaschim and Lumbini provinces.

“Necessary precautions are advised, as there is a possibility of hot winds and a heat wave in the Tarai region until June 10,” the Department stated.

Recently, Nepalgunj recorded the year’s highest temperature at 44.2 degrees Celsius, followed closely by Dhangadhi at 44.1 degrees Celsius.

Currently, the weather is partly cloudy in the hilly regions and clear in other parts of the country.

This is due to the influence of local and westerly winds, as well as a low-pressure area formed around Bihar, India, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

Later this afternoon, the weather is expected to remain partly to generally cloudy in the hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki, and clear in the rest of the country.

There is a possibility of light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning in some areas of the hilly regions of Bagmati, Gandaki, and Koshi provinces.

Additionally, storms may occur in some areas of Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces.
