Over 1.6 million Nepali nationals venture abroad in the past year, noteworthy influx to Russia amidst geopolitical tensions



KATHMANDU: In a significant demographic shift, a staggering 1.6 million Nepali nationals embarked on journeys abroad in the past year, as reported by the Department of Immigration. The highest influx was observed towards the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with a detailed breakdown revealing diverse destinations chosen by Nepali migrants.

From January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023, precisely 1,603,836 individuals ventured overseas, marking a considerable movement in the demographic landscape. The United Arab Emirates emerged as the top destination, attracting 271,088 Nepali nationals, followed closely by 180,602 heading to India and 179,441 choosing Qatar as their destination.

Malaysia welcomed 165,201 Nepali nationals, while 136,203 opted for Saudi Arabia, and 105,343 headed to Australia last year. Notably, 70,915 Nepali nationals left for foreign shores with the intent of permanent settlement.

In a unique twist, amidst the Russia-Ukraine war, an unexpected surge was observed, with 1,795 Nepali individuals flying to Russia. This figure specifically represents those departing from the Tribhuvan International Airport, shedding light on the dynamic migration patterns amid global geopolitical tensions.
