Govt opens 57 more peaks for climbing

KATHMANDU: The Government of Nepal has announced the opening of climbing activities on 57 additional mountains.

This decision was made during a cabinet meeting on Monday.

Government Spokesperson and Minister of Communication and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung said that while Nepal is known for its vast array of mountains, many remain inaccessible for mountaineering.

This new initiative aims to promote and manage these peaks under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, with the Department of Tourism overseeing the efforts.

Earlier this year, in June, the Department recommended the opening of these mountains, which range in elevation from 6,000 to 6,500 meters.

The newly accessible peaks span from East Taplejung to West Dolpa and Humla.

Previously, 419 mountain peaks in Nepal had already been opened for climbing, including all eight-thousanders, such as the iconic Mount Everest.
