KATHMANDU: The bodily remains of five Nepalis who were involved in the Russian military and killed in the Russia-Ukraine war have been handed over to their families.
Although the deceased were cremated in Russia, the families had granted permission for the cremation.
The five individuals have been identified as Devan Rai, Hari Prasad Aryal, Pritam Karki, Anit Kumar Saha, and Ganesh Shrestha, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Ministry also reported that 118 families, whose loved ones went missing after joining the Russian military, have applied for assistance in locating and returning them.
Additionally, relatives of 166 Nepalis injured in the war have requested help in facilitating their return.
According to the Ministry’s data, 36 Nepali youths have died in the ongoing conflict.
Five Nepalis injured in the war are currently receiving treatment, while one has already returned home.
To date, 162 Nepali youths have returned home, 22 applications for DNA testing have been submitted, and six letters requesting documents from Moscow for compensation have been sent.
The Ministry is still awaiting certified information on the deaths of several other victims, including Bikash Rai from Morang, Netra Bahadur Thapa from Kaski, Uday Raj Tharu from Rupandehi, Pirtam Rai from Bhojpur, Lalit Singh Doval from Darchula, Hem Kumar Magar from Kailali, Tara Prakash Gharti from Salyan, and Ramkumar Budhamagar from Rukum.
Six Nepalis have been taken hostage by the Ukrainian army: Bibek Khatri (Bardiya), Siddhartha Dhakal (Kavre), Bikas Rai (Morang), Pratik Pun (Rolpa), Sujan Subedi (Chitwan), and Ishwor Lamchhane (Makwanpur).
