House committee unanimously endorses report on TJ Bill
The report on the Transitional Justice Amendment Bill has been unanimously approved by the Law, Justice, and Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives. The committee meeting, held at Singha Durbar on Thursday, concluded with the unanimous passing of the report. This report will be submitted to the House of Representatives at its next session. The bill, introduced by the government, was presented in the House of Representatives. The House then referred the bill to the committee for further discussion. Despite several stages of review, the committee initially faced disputes over four key issues. These disputes were resolved through high-level political discussions.
Monsoon catastrophe claims 167 lives, displaces thousands
The monsoon disaster, driven by incessant rain, has claimed the lives of 167 people due to floods, landslides, and other related incidents across the country from June 10 until Wednesday afternoon. Meanwhile, in the past 24 hours, 12 lives have been lost. The fatalities include 52 in Gandaki Province, 33 in Lumbini Province, 30 in Bagmati Province, 25 in Koshi Province, 10 in Sudurpaschim Province, 8 in Karnali Province, 6 in Madhesh Province, and 3 in Kathmandu Valley. Injuries have also been reported, with 51 people hurt in Karnali Province, 44 in Gandaki Province, 37 in Koshi Province, 19 in Bagmati Province, 14 in Sudurpaschim Province, 13 in Lumbini Province, 10 in Madhesh Province, and 11 in Kathmandu Valley.
Turkish Airlines plane ‘overshoots’ landing in Kathmandu
A Turkish Airlines plane arriving from Istanbul overshot the runway while attempting to land at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu. Flight radar data indicated that the aircraft, originally scheduled to land at 6:10 am, touched down 20 minutes later than planned following the overshoot. Airport officials attributed the incident to a ‘missed approach,’ while an air traffic controller (ATC) cited an ‘unstable approach’ as the primary cause of the overshoot. In aviation, “overshoot” refers to a situation where an aircraft lands beyond the intended point on the runway or misses the runway.
Govt urges Oman to establish Embassy in Nepal
The Nepali government has requested Oman to establish an embassy in Nepal. Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal made this appeal during a meeting with senior Omani officials in Muscat. During the inaugural session of the Nepal-Oman bilateral consultation mechanism, Foreign Secretary Lamsal highlighted that over 21,000 Nepalis are employed in Oman, underscoring the need for enhanced cooperation in various areas of mutual interest. According to the Nepali Embassy in Muscat, the meeting covered a wide range of topics related to Nepal-Oman relations. Discussions included mutual cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1977, high-level exchanges, trade, investment, economic cooperation, agriculture, energy, tourism, labor, foreign employment, culture, education, and direct air links.
Gold price up by Rs 300 per tola today
Gold price has increased by Rs 300 per tola in the domestic market today. According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, fine gold is priced at Rs 146,600 per tola today. On Wednesday, fine gold was traded at Rs 146,300 per tola. Meanwhile, the price of silver has been fixed at Rs 1,690 per tola.
House Committee orders air security probe after fatal crashes
The International Relations and Tourism Committee of the House of Representatives (HoR) has urged the government to assess the implementation of air safety rules and guidelines. The committee has mandated the government to investigate air security issues within 15 days and recommend actions against those found culpable. This directive follows two recent major air crashes in Nepal. An airplane belonging to Saurya Airlines and a helicopter of Air Dynasty crashed within a two-week interval.
NEPSE index up by 0.24 percent
The NEPSE Index closed at 2,766.38 points today, reflecting a modest increase of 6.70 points or 0.24% from the previous trading session. This follows a rise of 108.35 points in the last session. The index started the trading day at 2,772.84 points. During the session, it hit an intraday low of 2,811.15 points and an intraday high of 2,744.86 points before ending the day at 2,766.38 points. Today’s trading saw 322 stocks exchanged across 209,965 transactions, totaling 50,946,832 shares.
Four Bhairahawa-based industries clear outstanding dues with penalties
Four industries in Bhairahawa have cleared their outstanding dues for dedicated and trunk line feeders, including a 25 percent fine. While large industries, in collusion with political parties and the administration, remain reluctant to settle their dues, small and medium-scale industries in Bhairahawa have taken the lead in clearing their payments. Yashoda Foods Pvt. Ltd paid Rs 425,231, Jai Durga Plastic Factory paid Rs 70,532, Sona Packaging paid Rs 35,537, and Sona Polymers Industries paid Rs 346,389. These amounts include a 25 percent fine. Reports suggest that these industries were under pressure from businessmen to delay clearing their dues. According to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), 57 large-scale industries still owe a total of Rs 8,047,400,239.
Kathmandu metropolis honors Women’s Volleyball Team with Rs 100,000 each
The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has awarded Rs 100,000 each to the members of Nepal’s Women’s Volleyball Team after they secured the runner-up position in the CAVA National Women’s Volleyball League on Wednesday. Nepal was defeated by India in the finals held in Kathmandu. The metropolis honored the team members, including the coach, team manager, and therapist, with the cash prize. Each player received Rs 100,000, while the coach, assistant coach, team manager, and therapist received Rs 50,000 each.
NEA presents evidence of industries’ outstanding dues to Public Accounts Committee
The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has presented evidence related to outstanding dues from industries using power from dedicated and trunk line feeders. The evidence includes data from TOD meters reading of these industries. The NEA submitted a minivan full of documents to the Public Accounts Committee under the House of Representatives (HoR) on Thursday afternoon. According to the NEA, 57 large-scale industries that used 24/7 power supply from Magh 2072 to Baishak 2075 BS during the country’s load-shedding period have yet to clear dues amounting to Rs 8,047,400,239.
Govt scraps National Security Advisor post
The government has abolished the post of National Security Advisor. A Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday decided to this effect, scrapping the “National Security Council’s National Security Advisor Appointment, Service Conditions, and Facilities Directive, 2080.” The directive, introduced by the government led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal, had earlier appointed Shankar Das Bairagi to the post. At that time, Bairagi was serving as the Chief Secretary and was due to retire in three months. Prior to his retirement, Bairagi was appointed as National Security Advisor.
