Govt urges Oman to establish Embassy in Nepal

KATHMANDU: The Nepali government has requested Oman to establish an embassy in Nepal.

Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal made this appeal during a meeting with senior Omani officials in Muscat.

During the inaugural session of the Nepal-Oman bilateral consultation mechanism, Foreign Secretary Lamsal highlighted that over 21,000 Nepalis are employed in Oman, underscoring the need for enhanced cooperation in various areas of mutual interest.

According to the Nepali Embassy in Muscat, the meeting covered a wide range of topics related to Nepal-Oman relations.

Discussions included mutual cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1977, high-level exchanges, trade, investment, economic cooperation, agriculture, energy, tourism, labor, foreign employment, culture, education, and direct air links.

Both sides agreed to deepen their cooperation in these fields.

Additionally, the meeting focused on strengthening people-to-people relations and leveraging opportunities for economic benefits.

Foreign Secretary Lamsal expressed gratitude to the Omani government for providing employment opportunities to Nepali citizens and encouraged further exploration of opportunities aligned with Oman’s ‘2040 Vision and Strategy.’

She also identified new areas for mutual cooperation and stressed the importance of a meaningful partnership in economic, cultural, and educational sectors, including collaboration with the private sector.

Highlighting the potential for investment in Nepal, Foreign Secretary Lamsal urged for capital to be directed toward sectors such as hydropower, tourism, and green hydrogen.
