Gagan Thapa objects to Shekhar Koirala faction’s gathering in Biratnagar

BIRATNAGAR: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa has expressed objections to a local-level assembly organized by Dr. Shekhar Koirala’s faction in Biratnagar ahead of the Koshi Province Congress Committee’s provincial conference.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the first Koshi Province Congress conference on Saturday, Thapa criticized the assembly held on December 3 by the Koirala faction, which brought together municipal presidents from the province.

The event was coordinated by the Congress’ Biratnagar Metropolitan Committee.

Thapa highlighted the importance of coordination with the central committee when organizing such events.

“Recently, the Rupandehi Regional Committee announced a gathering of presidents from all 165 constituencies. We requested them not to proceed and offered to organize it centrally,” said Thapa. “Kaski also proposed inviting presidents from 77 districts, and we said the same. Assemblies can happen nationwide, but they should be coordinated.”

Reflecting on his journey to becoming General Secretary through a “rebel” campaign, Thapa called for collective responsibility in strengthening the party. “We, too, came here as rebels. My point is simple: let’s all work together to manage the party,” he said.
