KATHMANDU: A tragic helicopter crash occurred in Suryachaur, Shivpuri Rural Municipality Ward Number 7, Nuwakot district, on Wednesday afternoon.

The helicopter, belonging to Air Dynasty, departed from Kathmandu at 1:54 PM but lost contact just three minutes later.

It is believed to have crashed around 2:20 PM, resulting in the loss of five lives.

The victims included the Nepali pilot and four Chinese nationals.

This incident marks the 40th helicopter crash in Nepal, with a total of 97 fatalities recorded since the first crash on December 27, 1979, in the Langtang region, which claimed six lives.

One of the deadliest crashes occurred 27 years later in Taplejung, where a Shree Airlines helicopter crash killed 24 people.

Other significant crashes include an Asian Airlines helicopter crash in Solukhumbu in Ashoj 14, 2059, killing 11 people, and an Air Dynasty helicopter crash in Falgun 15, 2075, in Taplejung, which killed seven people, including Tourism Minister Rabindra Adhikari.

On a brighter note, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, there were no human casualties in 19 of the 40 crashes.
