SC hearing on ‘vacate’ petition on MP Development Fund today

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) is conducting a hearing on the ‘vacate’ petition filed by the Federal Parliament Secretariat.

The petition seeks the implementation of the Parliamentary Constituency Infrastructure Development Program proposed by the government, allowing parliamentarians access to up to 50 million rupees for development projects in their constituencies.

In January, the Law Division of the Parliament Secretariat initiated legal proceedings by filing a petition with the Supreme Court.

The essence of the petition revolves around the government’s introduction of the Parliamentary Constituency Infrastructure Development Program, also known as the MP Development Fund, in the current financial year budget.

This program enables Members of Parliament to allocate five million rupees for development initiatives in each constituency.

However, the program faced legal opposition as advocate Trilok Bahadur Chand filed a petition against it.

Earlier, the constitutional bench, headed by Chief Justice Bishwombhar Prasad Shrestha, issued an interim order preventing the expenditure of funds allocated to six infrastructure development programs.
