Maoist Center’s Secretariat meeting underway at Baluwatar to finalize NA candidates

KATHMANDU: A Secretariat meeting of the ruling Maoist Center is underway at the Prime Minister’ official residence in Baluwatar, where party leaders are deliberating to select candidates for the January 25 National Assembly elections.

Chairman of the Maoist Center and Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, convened the meeting of party leaders to discuss and decide on the prospective candidate.

Providing insights into the ongoing meeting, General Secretary Dev Gurung stated that the session commenced moments ago at Baluwatar.

Earlier today, a meeting of the ruling coalition parties was held to negotiate the seat distribution for the National Assembly.

However, consensus on the allocation of seats remains elusive following the meeting.

Post the coalition deliberations, the Maoist Center organized a meeting with its party officials to strategize and make decisions.

The impending departure of 20 National Assembly members, completing their 6-year term on March 3, has intensified the discussions.

Elections for 19 of these seats are scheduled for January 25, with the remaining one to be nominated by the President.

Speculations suggest that the Maoists are poised to secure 6 out of the 20 vacant seats.

Notably, 3 members from the Maoist Center constitute the outgoing members, and there is anticipation that the party may secure an additional 3 seats in the upcoming elections.
