KATHMANDU: Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, the chair of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), has claimed that Ravi Lamichhane, the chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), is innocent in the cooperative fraud case.

Speaking at a press conference held at Bharatpur Airport in Chitwan on Sunday, Prachanda stated that Lamichhane has been unfairly portrayed in the cooperative fraud investigation report.

Meanwhile, Prachanda mentioned that the government could investigate if necessary, regarding the accusations linked to the Gorkha Media Network that Lamichhane is involved in.

He said that he heard that the court is not ready to give a ‘clean chit’ to Lamichhane.

Moreover, Prachanda criticized the opposition, particularly KP Sharma Oli, the chairperson of the Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist–Leninist), who is currently the Prime Minister, for allegedly preventing action against those responsible in the cooperative scam. He defended Lamichhane, stating that official information obtained from the police confirms Lamichhane’s innocence.

Similarly, Prachanda opined that because CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli, who is against the formation of the Cooperative Investigation Committee, is now the Prime Minister, no one is stopping the culprits from being prosecuted in the Cooperative Fraud Case.

He said that when he was the prime minister, he did not do any wrong work to give a ‘clean chit’ to Ravi Lamichhane, and after the official information received from the police, he believed that Lamichhane was innocent.

Prachanda also asserted confidence in winning elections single-handedly now that they have gained considerable public support. He criticized the government’s lack of preparedness in handling natural disasters, blaming substantial financial losses on inadequate response to floods and landslides.

He expressed that the government has failed to understand the severity of the flood and landslide problems faced by the affected communities.
