Govt appoints AIG Deepak Thapa as new CIB chief, transfers AIG Shyamlal Gyawali

The government has transferred Shyamlal Gyawali, the head of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), and appointed AIG Deepak Thapa as the new Chief of the CIB. Gyawali was appointed to the CIB post in March 2024 by Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane, following the transfer of AIG Kiran Bajracharya to the Nepal Police Headquarters Operations Department amidst controversy surrounding a gold smuggling case. With the recent change in government, Gyawali has now been transferred to the Provincial Coordination Department.

Madhesh Province CM Singh expands Cabinet, appoints five new state ministers

Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh of Madhesh Province expanded his Cabinet on Tuesday, appointing five new State Ministers. The Province Chief administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly appointed ministers. With these new appointments, the Madhesh Province Cabinet now has 20 members. CM Singh appointed two State Ministers from the Nepali Congress, one each from the CPN-UML, the Janamat Party, and the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP).

Report: Rural roads constructed by Bharatpur metropolis caused Simaltal landslide

A task force investigating the disappearance of two buses and their passengers in the Trishuli River due to a landslide in Simaltal, located on the Narayangadh-Muglin road section of Chitwan, submitted its report to Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak on Tuesday. The report indicated that the construction of rural roads by the Bharatpur metropolis, without consulting engineers, was the main cause of the landslide. According to the report, a flash flood from the rural roads swept away the two passenger buses at Simaltal, Chitwan. Joint Secretary Chabi Rizal stated that the local government constructed rural roads on steep and hilly terrain without proper engineering consultation.

Nepal advances to CAVA National Women’s Volleyball League final, thrashing Iran

The home team, Nepal, has advanced to the finals of the CAVA National Women’s Volleyball League after defeating Iran on Tuesday. With this victory, Nepal will now face India in the league finals. In the semi-final match played today, Nepal beat Iran in straight sets, winning 3-0. Nepal defeated Iran 25-21 in the first set, 28-26 in the second set, and 25-20 in the third set.

Advisory: Night buses urged to avoid 34 high-risk districts

Meteorologists have issued warnings for 34 districts across five provinces that are at high risk of floods, landslides, and inundation on Tuesday and Wednesday. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has advised residents in these high-risk areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. Additionally, the NDRRMA has urged night buses to avoid travel in these areas during the night to mitigate the risk of natural disasters.

Minister Bhandari leaves for India to attend ministerial-level BIMSTEC meeting

Minister for Industry, Commerce, and Supplies, Damodar Bhandari, departed for New Delhi today on a three-day official visit to India. He is attending the Business Summit of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). The Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India, in association with the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), is hosting the 1st BIMSTEC Business Summit in New Delhi from August 6-8, 2024.

Govt recommends Rs 200,000 compensation for Simaltal landslide victims’ families

A task force has recommended that the government provide Rs 200,000 in compensation to the families of the victims of the Simaltal landslide. The task force was formed to investigate the disappearance of two buses and their passengers in the Trishuli River due to a landslide in Simaltal, located on the Narayangadh-Muglin road section of Chitwan. The task force submitted its report to Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak on Tuesday. The recommendation includes Rs 200,000 for the families of each victim, with an additional Rs 100,000 for families who lost more than one member. The task force also advised compensation for the families of those who are still missing and free medical treatment for the injured, as the accident was classified as a natural disaster.

July 7 record-breaking rainfall in Kanchanpur due to ‘Terai Cloudburst’: Report

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has released a study report on the extreme precipitation recorded in Kanchanpur on July 7, terming the phenomenon a ‘Terai Cloudburst.’ The report, made public on Sunday, followed a field visit to Dodhara, Hanumannagar, and Sundarpur to inspect automated rainfall measurement instruments. Data from the device in Sundarpur deviated from Department standards, prompting further assessment. Hanumannagar experienced 102 mm of rainfall in one hour, from 10:05 pm to 11:05 pm on July 7. From 8:45 am on July 7 to 8:45 am on July 8, Hanumannagar received 573.6 mm of rainfall, Sundarpur 556.4 mm, and Dodhara 624 mm.

Fast Track achieves 35% progress, set for year-end completion

The Kathmandu-Terai-Madhesh Fast Track, a national pride project, has achieved 35% physical progress, as reported by the Nepal Army. During an event marking the breakthrough of the Ghattepakha-Dhedre tunnel section, the Nepal Army highlighted that the 1.728 km long tunnel at Bakaiya Rural Municipality-12, Makwanpur, was completed on Tuesday. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel, and ambassadors from China and South Korea. The Nepal Army confirmed that the track will be ready for vehicular use by the end of the year 2081 BS.

Dengue claims one life; Cholera confirmed in 30 individuals

The incidence of vector-borne and waterborne diseases is rising across the country. According to the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) under the Department of Health Services, one person has died from dengue. Over the past seven and a half months, 2,365 individuals nationwide have been infected with dengue. The EDCD has confirmed cholera in 30 individuals across the country, though there have been no reported fatalities from the disease as of yet.

Gold price down by Rs 2,300 per tola today

Gold prices have decreased by Rs 2,300 per tola today. According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, fine gold is priced at Rs 147,700 per tola on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the price of standard gold is traded at Rs 147,000 per tola. On Sunday, fine gold was traded at Rs 150,000 per tola. Meanwhile, the price of silver has bene fixed at Rs 1,725 per tola.

Monsoon-related disasters claim 154 lives in Nepal

Monsoon-related disasters have claimed the lives of 154 individuals so far this year. The Nepal Police Headquarters stated that landslides, floods, and inundation resulted in fatalities across various regions: three in the Kathmandu Valley, 25 in Koshi, six in Madhes, 20 in Bagmati, 43 in Gandaki, 29 in Lumbini, eight in Karnali, and 10 in Sudurpaschim Province. Additionally, 47 people remain missing and 186 have been injured. The floods have caused damage to 384 houses, with 261 houses, 95 huts, 43 bridges, two school buildings, and two government offices also affected.

Monsoon becomes active again from today

The Weather Forecasting Division has stated that the monsoon will become active again starting today (Tuesday). The Division has predicted light to moderate rain across most parts of the country over the next two days, with the potential for heavy rain in some areas. In its weather bulletin, the Division has highlighted the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rain in certain locations across Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpaschim provinces, as well as a few areas in Karnali and Madhes provinces. Specifically, one or two places in Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces may experience very heavy rainfall.
