PANCHTHAR: A man has been arrested after he was found to have swallowed golden jewelry weighing 1 tola or 11.7 grams that he had stolen in a failed robbery incident.

Surendra Yongya,28 of Phidim municipality-1 was arrested by police red handed from the house of Bishnu Kumari Tamang of Phidim municipality-2.

The incident took place in April 10 last month. According to Sumit Kushwaha, Information Officer of the District Police Office, the family members of Bishnu Kumari informed police after Yongya was found stealing from a steel cupboard containing the gold jewelry.

The police team arrived immediately and arrested him. He was arrested with Rs 15,000 in cash but nothing else in hand.

However, the family members found a jewelry weighing one tola of gold missing and alerted the police, after suspecting that Yongya may have swallowed it.

An X-ray carried out at the District Hospital Phidim confirmed the presence of metal in Yongya’s stomach.

“Around 36 hours after the ingestion the golden jewelry was recovered from his faeces,” said information officer Kushwaha.

Meanwhile, after completing all the investigation related to the theft, the District Police Office Panchthar filed a case against Yongya in the District Court Panchthar.

The district court ordered the release of the defendant Yongya on a bail of Rs 150,000 on May 5.

But after failing to deposit the bail amount, Yongya was sent to the District Jail Panchthar.
