Chilling temperatures grip Nepal: Caution urged amidst cold surge

KATHMANDU: With an ongoing dip in the mercury, a pervasive cold has settled across the nation, including the federal capital Kathmandu.

The Weather Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a plea for everyone to take necessary measures and precautions in response to the sudden increase in cold.

Sanjeev Adhikari, a meteorologist at the Division, revealed that the minimum temperature in Kathmandu today is recorded at 4.5 degrees Celsius, with a maximum of 17 degrees Celsius. This marks a notable drop from the minimum temperature of 3 degrees Celsius recorded on Friday.

Additionally, the Division forecasts a further dip, expecting the minimum temperature to reach two to four degrees Celsius on Sunday morning. The current visibility in Kathmandu is reported at four kilometers.

While there is light snowfall observed in the high hilly and mountain regions of Koshi and Gandaki provinces, the Division anticipates no significant change in the weather for the next three days.

Jumla records the lowest temperature at -5.7 degrees Celsius, down from -6 degrees Celsius on Friday, as per the Division’s data.

The weather forecast bulletin from the Division notes a partial effect of westerly winds in Nepal. Generally clear conditions prevail in the hilly areas, including Koshi, Madhes, and other parts of the country, with fog reported in some places in the Tarai region.

Partly cloudy skies are expected in the afternoon over the hilly areas of Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Karnali provinces. There is a possibility of light snowfall in select areas of the high hilly and mountain regions of Koshi and Gandaki provinces.
