Ruling coalition convenes crucial meeting for NA seat sharing

KATHMANDU: The meeting of the ruling coalition parties is set to take place today.

Scheduled at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar at 9 am, the meeting aims to discuss the division of seats for the upcoming National Assembly elections on January 25.

Although there’s been a lingering hesitance from the CPN-Maoist Center and the Nepali Congress (NC) regarding seat sharing, the recent decision by the CPN-UML to field candidates for all 19 seats in the National Assembly has drawn the attention of the coalition parties towards crucial discussions.

Currently, nine members from the UML will be excluded from the National Assembly. Among these nine members, the seat allocation between the parties is pending. The parties have agreed to retain their seats and share the seats they are likely to claim from the ones formerly bagged by UML.

The tenure of 20 senators, including the chairperson, is set to expire from February 4 onwards in the National Assembly. The President is anticipated to appoint one candidate recommended by the Cabinet, while the remaining 19 members will be elected through voting.

The Election Commission has scheduled January 8 as the candidate nomination deadline for the upcoming National Assembly member elections to be held on January 25.
