KATHMANDU: Nepal Airlines flights have been disrupted after cabin crew strikes led to the cancellation of international flights, including those to Dubai and Hong Kong.
The strikes, initiated by flight attendants and hostesses, are in response to Nepal Airlines’ mandatory retirement policy at the age of 45.
The unrest has raised concerns as Nepal approaches its festival season, a crucial time for air travel.
Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Badri Pandey has intervened, urging the parties involved to avoid disrupting essential air services during festivals.
Pandey held an urgent meeting with representatives from the striking cabin crew and Nepal Airlines officials, emphasising the importance of maintaining air services during times of crisis and celebration.
“Even the Supreme Court has issued two separate rulings concerning the age limit issue, but no final decision has been made,” Minister Pandey said following the discussion, “In the meantime, we are seeking input from legal experts and the Attorney General to understand if these regulations can be amended. However, under no circumstances should services be interrupted, especially during festivals.”
The strikes have been brewing since January, when the Nepal Airlines Cabin Crew Association filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court, alleging age-based discrimination and inequity in service benefits.
The corporation’s decision not to renew contracts for cabin crew who reached the age limit reignited the protests on October 2.
Despite the unresolved legal dispute, the cabin crew assured Minister Pandey that they would work toward resolving the issue and hoped to return to work soon.
For now, the travel disruptions are likely to continue, affecting passengers and cargo during a time when Nepal’s aviation sector typically experiences a surge in demand due to the festival season.
