Cabinet approves PM Oli’s US visit
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s visit to the United States (US) has been officially approved.
The Council of Ministers held on Thursday approved Prime Minister Oli’s visit to the United States to attend the United Nations General Assembly from September 10.
The Prime Minister’s delegation will include his wife, Radhika Shakya; Foreign Minister; Chief Advisor; Foreign Secretary; and his personal physician.
Directly elected PM and President not feasible: UML leader Gyawali
CPN UML leader Pradeep Gyawali has asserted that transitioning to a system with a directly elected Prime Minister and President is currently unfeasible.
Gyawali made this statement during a program on joint government practices and government influence, organized by the Constitution Watch Group at the Pavilion Happ in Kathmandu on Thursday.
He explained, “Nepal cannot adopt a system of directly elected president and prime minister by amending the Constitution at this time. Such a change is not practical for our country right now.”
PM Oli will see people’s power now: Prachanda
Chairman of CPN-Maoist Center, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ warned Prime Minister KP Oli of showing people’s power.
Speaking at a party event at the central office in Parisdanda on Thursday morning, Prachanda referenced Oli’s recent remark that he had metaphorically “kicked Prachanda out of power.”
“PM Oli will see people’s power now,” Prachanda retorted.
It should be noted that during CPN-UML’s politburo meeting on Wednesday, Prime Minister Oli had implied that Prachanda was ousted from power through a decisive action.
Prachanda’s extremist approach destabilizing country: UML leader Pokharel
Shankar Pokharel, General Secretary of CPN-UML, has criticized Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ for his undemocratic attempts to lead the country down a path similar to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh after losing power.
Pokharel voiced his objections during a press conference held at Surkhet Airport on Thursday.
“Prachanda’s extremist approach is destabilizing the country in many ways,” Pokharel said.
“The opposition leader has become increasingly agitated within Parliament due to Prachanda’s non-parliamentary tactics. Using Sri Lanka and Bangladesh as examples is not a democratic stance,” he added.
Nirmala Panta’s murder will be thoroughly investigated: Home Minister
Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has said that the investigation into Nirmala Panta’s murder will be conducted thoroughly.
Speaking at a press conference in Mahendranagar today, he emphasized that the case is being treated with utmost seriousness.
“I have taken this case very seriously. This incident will be investigated in depth,” he said.
Nirmala Pant, a 13-year-old girl from Bhimdatta Municipality-2 in Kanchanpur, was murdered on July 26, 2018, after being raped.
Nepal witnesses 720,334 tourist arrivals in past eight months
Nepal witnessed a significant increase in foreign tourist arrivals in the first eight months of 2024, with over seven hundred thousand foreign tourists entering the country.
According to the Nepal Tourism Board, a total of 720,334 tourists visited Nepal from January through August this year.
In August, the number of foreign tourists rose by 8.3 percent compared to the previous month, totaling 72,719 visitors.
Gold prices remain unchanged for four days
There has been no change in the price of gold since September 2, according to the Nepal Gold and Silver Traders Federation.
On that date, gold was traded at Rs 152,000 per tola and has remained at that price since.
In contrast, the price of silver has increased by 10 rupees today, bringing the current trading price to 1,765 rupees per tola.
Home Minister Lekhak urges public to trust NC-UML agreement
Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has called on the public to place their trust in the new political agreement between the two largest parties in parliament, the CPN-UML and the Nepali Congress.
He emphasized that there should be no doubts about the understanding reached between the two parties.
“The government was formed based on a seven-point agreement between the two parties. This alliance will continue until the upcoming election,” the Home Minister stated.
Chief Election Commissioners from SAARC nations meet with President Paudel
Chief Election Commissioners from the Forum of the Election Management Bodies of South Asia (FEMBoSA) are currently in Kathmandu for the Forum’s 12th annual meeting.
Today, they paid a courtesy call on President Ramchandra Paudel at the Office of the President, Shital Niwas.
During the meeting, President Paudel emphasized that periodic elections are fundamental to democracy, ensuring citizens’ access to and ownership of the State. He highlighted the importance of making certain that every election is free and impartial.
PADT urges people visiting Pashupatinath to avoid expensive jewelry for Haritalika Teej
The Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT) has urged pilgrims visiting Pashupatinath on Haritalika Teej to refrain from bringing expensive jewelry and small children.
The Trust has emphasized the need for caution due to the large crowds expected at the temple.
Rewati Raman Adhikari, spokesperson for the PADT, explained that past incidents of jewelry theft have prompted this precaution.
He stated, “There have been numerous complaints about stolen jewelry in previous years. To prevent such issues, we advise against wearing expensive jewelry in the crowd.”
