KATHMANDU: Chief Minister (CM) Saroj Kumar Yadav of Madhesh Province is scheduled to seek a vote of confidence today, Wednesday, for the fifth time.
CM Yadav is testing the floor after the CPN-UML, CPN (Maoist Center), and CPN (Unified Socialist) recently withdrew their support from the provincial government.
This will be the fifth instance CM Yadav has sought a vote of confidence from the provincial assembly.
A meeting of the provincial assembly is scheduled for 3 PM this afternoon, where CM Yadav will seek his vote of confidence once again.
According to constitutional provisions, a vote of confidence must be sought within 30 days from the day any coalition partner withdraws its support from the government.
CM Yadav, who successfully secured a vote of confidence four times previously, faces a challenging political landscape this time.
If CM Yadav secures all votes from his party, the Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal, he will receive 41 votes, including 19 from his party and 22 from the Nepali Congress.
In the 107-member provincial assembly, a majority of 54 votes is required to win the vote of confidence.
Excluding the Speaker, there are 24 lawmakers from UML, 13 from the Janamat Party, nine from the CPN (Maoist Center), eight from the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party, and seven from the CPN (US).
The Loktantrik Samajbadi Party has yet to decide whether to support CM Yadav.
Similarly, the Nepal Sangiya Samajbadi Party, Nagarik Unmukti Party, and Rastriya Prajatantra Party, each holding one seat in the province, have yet to confirm their stance.
