UML Chair Oli urges swift resolution of transitional justice issues
CPN-UML Chairman K P Oli has emphasized the need to expedite matters related to the conflict period, including issues concerning bills about Truth and Reconciliation and the Commission for Investigation of Enforced Disappeared Persons. During the inauguration of the party’s Mahottari District Convention in Janakpur today, Chairman Oli stressed the importance of settling the issues from the conflict era. “We have encountered some challenges in the government-proposed bills on transitional justice,” he said, “The issues should be resolved to ensure justice for the victims and make it acceptable to the international community.”
Cooperatives victims mount pressure to register case against RSP Chair Lamichhane
Victims of cooperative fraud are attempting to file a case at Kaski police against Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairman Rabi Lamichhane and various individuals. According to sources at the District Police Office, Kaski, the victims associated with Suryadarshan Cooperative have lodged complaints against Lamichhane, former Vice President Nandkishor Pun’s son Deepesh Pun, former Chairman of the Cooperative Gyan Bahadur Bamjan, and Nertapani Bastola, among others.

The winter session of the Federal Parliament has officially commenced today. The agenda includes the official communication inviting the session from the President and the letter outlining the received responsibilities from the President’s office.
Doctor’s License Exam: 56.68% pass in NMC’s examination
KATHMANDU: The Nepal Medical Council (NMC) has officially disclosed the results of the doctor’s license examination. In the 68th license examinations conducted by the Council from January 30 to February 2, only 56.68% of medical professionals have successfully passed. The Council has reported a combined pass percentage of 56.68%, with 55.96% for medical and 61.05% for dental candidates. In the examination, 737 candidates participated in the medical category, and 285 in the dental category, bringing the total number of examinees to 1,022.
District Court extends three days remand for investigation into Arun Chaudhary’s case
The Kathmandu District Court has granted a three-day extension for the investigation against Arun Chaudhary and three others, who have been arrested on charges of grabbing 10 ropanis of land in Bansbari. The individuals under scrutiny include Chaudhary, the former director of Champion Footwear Factory, Ajit Narayan Singh Thapa, the former chairman of Bansbari Shoe Factory Limited, and Sanjay Thakur, the chairman of CG Chandbagh Residency Pvt Ltd. They were apprehended by the Central Investigation Bureau on February 1.
NEPSE surges by double digits on Monday
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index witnessed a substantial double-digit surge, marking the second trading day of the week. The Nepali stock market surged by 14.57 points, reaching 2076.27 points today. The total trading volume in the stock market on Monday amounted to Rs 2.43 billion. 7,491,300 shares from 310 companies were traded 56,776 times during the day. In terms of group performance, the Hotel and Tourism sector witnessed a negative change of 0.20 percent, the Production and Processing group showed a decline of 0.09 percent, Mutual Funds recorded a 0.06 percent decrease, and the Life Insurance group experienced a 0.41 percent decline.
EC calls for voter registration in electoral roll
The Election Commission (EC) has extended an invitation to individuals to register their names in the voter list for the upcoming by-elections. In a press release issued today, the Commission urged citizens to register their names if they have become eligible or missed the opportunity in previous registrations, as there are 23 vacant positions in local bodies, representative assemblies, and provincial assemblies where by-elections are scheduled to take place. Following the completion of the elections for local bodies on April 23, 2022, and for representative and provincial assemblies on November 20, 2022, the Commission has declared that 23 positions remain vacant.
Mayor Shah confirms free parking at Dharahara will persist despite Ministry’s directive
In response to the Ministry of Urban Development’s letter urging the cessation of the free parking service at Dharahara due to ongoing construction, Mayor Balen Shah of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has taken to Facebook to affirm that the complimentary parking facility will continue to operate. Expressing his dissatisfaction with the Ministry’s directive, Mayor Shah criticized the order to halt the service during the construction process, which has extended for two years and nine months. He emphasized his commitment to maintaining the free parking service at Dharahara, despite the ongoing construction challenges.
Government extends deadline for Balkumari incident investigation by 15 days
The government’s high-level commission, tasked with investigating the tragic Balkumari incident, has been granted a 15-day extension for its probe. The incident, sparked by a clash between EPS Korean Language students and security personnel during a protest, resulted in the unfortunate death of two youths. The clash also saw the torching of a vehicle belonging to Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Prakash Jwala.
