JANAKPURDHAM: CPN-UML Chairman K P Oli has emphasized the need to expedite matters related to the conflict period, including issues concerning bills about Truth and Reconciliation and the Commission for Investigation of Enforced Disappeared Persons.
During the inauguration of the party’s Mahottari District Convention in Janakpur today, Chairman Oli stressed the importance of settling the issues from the conflict era.
“We have encountered some challenges in the government-proposed bills on transitional justice,” he said, “The issues should be resolved to ensure justice for the victims and make it acceptable to the international community.”
The UML Chair assured the incorporation of the spirit of the Supreme Court verdict and international practices while formulating laws related to transitional justice.
When asked about granting additional powers to the provincial government in relation to the remaining rights given to the province, Chairman Oli indicated that he did not overlook the local levels.
UML Chair Oli accused the provincial government of neglecting its authority and underscored the need for the local levels to use the acquired powers correctly.
He expressed the opinion that the provincial government should not attempt to minimize the role of the police and should let it operate under the federal government.
