KATHMANDU: TikTok has removed 6,078 videos in Nepal over the past two months for violating its community guidelines.

A representative from TikTok shared that of the videos posted in April and June, 99.1% were removed immediately, while 93.2% were deleted within 24 hours.

The data was presented during the Digital Safety Summit Nepal, organized by TikTok in coordination with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, which took place in Kathmandu on Tuesday.

At the event, TikTok representative Sidra Jalil presented a working paper on the regulatory guidelines developed by TikTok.

Jalil emphasized that specific age groups have been categorized to ensure a dignified and systematic TikTok platform.

According to the guidelines, users must be at least 16 years old to send direct messages on TikTok and 18 years old to engage in live streams.

The representative noted that the lack of awareness about proper social media usage has led to these guidelines not being followed as intended.

TikTok’s Head of Public Policy and Government Relations for South Asia, Fordous Mottakin, affirmed that the company is committed to working closely with the Government of Nepal to promote digital literacy and online safety.

He also highlighted that the guidelines are specifically aimed at ensuring the safety of children and youth online.

Mottakin added that while some precautionary measures have already been implemented to create a safe online environment in Nepal, there is ongoing concern for the safety of TikTok users.
