Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy to kick off today



KATHMANDU: The Asia Rugby Emirates Men’s Sevens Trophy 2024 kicks off here today.

General Secretary of Nepal Rugby Association Govinda Ghimire said that all the preparations for the tournament to be held at the Dasharath Stadium in Tripureshwar have been completed.

A total of 16 Asian countries are competing in the tournament.

Representing the countries, 14 men’s teams and seven women’s teams are participating.

Those participating include Bahrain, Uzbekistan, Philippines, Pakistan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Guam and host Nepal.

All the teams have arrived in Kathmandu for the tournament.

The champion women’s and men’s teams of the tournament will win the trophy of Asia Rugby and gold medals while the second runner-up will receive silver medal and the third runner-up will receive bronze medal. Nepali national rugby team is being led Srishan Rai for women and Bikram Puri for men.

This tournament is a qualifier for the Asia Rugby Sevens Series to be held in 2025. Organized by Asia Rugby and managed by Nepal Rugby Association, 30 matches will be played on the first day and 20 matches on the second day.

This is the first time that Nepal is hosting such a senior level Asian rugby tournament.
