KASKI: Human remains discovered at the Mardi Himal base camp of Machhapuchhre Rural Municipality in Kaski have been identified as belonging to 22-year-old Michael Liu.

Liu had been out of contact since December 30, 2023.

Kaski Police Chief Superintendent Mohan Kumar Thapa confirmed that the remains have been identified through personal items found at the site, including clothing and a mobile phone.

“The family in Sweden has confirmed the identity through the brand of clothing and other personal items found,” Thapa said. “A police team has already departed for the location.”

The remains, along with bones, an iPhone, and some clothing, were found on Lam Hill within the base camp area.

Inspector Bodhraj Regmi from the Ward Police Office Bagar led the search team.

Police Chief Thapa noted that although the team can reach the site by helicopter, it requires a three-hour walk from the landing point, with a total travel time of about two days.

Following discussions at the municipality on Sunday, the Machhapuchhre Rural Municipality has dispatched local shepherd Gobinda Gautam and hotelier Chimnarayan Gautam to the site once more.

Hari Bahadur Chhetri, Chairman of Machhapuchhre Rural Municipality Ward Number 9, stated that Gobinda and Chimnarayan were sent to gather additional information.

Michael Liu had left Mardi High Camp for Base Camp at around 4 a.m. on December 30 last year but failed to return to his hotel that evening.

The Swedish Embassy in Kathmandu has been informed, and steps are being taken to contact Michael’s family.
