KATHMANDU: A new government is being formed in Sudurpaschim Province today.

Following the resignation of Chief Minister Dirgha Sodari on Friday, Province Chief Najir Miya granted time until 5 pm on Sunday to form the new government.

In the Nepali Congress-UML coalition equation, it was agreed that the Nepali Congress would appoint the Chief Minister for Sudurpaschim Province.

Accordingly, the Nepali Congress will present its claim for the Chief Minister position today, with the CPN-UML also providing support.

The Sudurpaschim Province has 53 provincial assembly members.

To secure a majority, the Chief Minister needs the support of 27 MPs.

The Nepali Congress has 18 MPs, and the UML has 11 MPs.

The combination of these two parties alone is sufficient to achieve a majority.

Additionally, it is anticipated that the Nagarik Unmukti Party will also support the coalition by this evening.

Though there are three Nepali Congress candidates vying for the Chief Minister position, Kamal Bahadur Shah, the leader of the parliamentary party, is the frontrunner.

The other aspirants, Prakash Deuba and Bahadur Singh Thapa, have agreed to support Shah.

Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has already instructed Shah to prepare for the role of Chief Minister.
