KATHMANDU: Today, the Kathmandu Valley experienced a thundershower due to the influence of local winds.
According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division, the local winds, originating from the vicinity of Butwal southwest of Kathmandu, entered the Valley via Dhading, resulting in rainfall.
Senior meteorologist Min Kumar Aryal from the Division explained that the winds triggered rainfall for about an hour and a half before moving northward.
He identified this as a pre-monsoon phenomenon.
Currently, Nepal is under the influence of local winds, partially affected by the Westerly winds, and a low-pressure system extending from the Northwest State of India to East Bengal.
The Division forecasts partly to generally cloudy skies in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, along with the hilly regions, and partly cloudy conditions in the rest of the country.
Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is expected in several places within these provinces, as well as in Lumbini, with chances of light snowfall in some high hilly and mountainous areas.
Tonight, the forecast indicates partly to generally cloudy skies in Koshi, Madhesh, and Gandaki provinces, along with the hilly regions, and partly cloudy to mainly clear conditions in the rest of the country.
Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is expected in a few places within Koshi, Madhesh, and Gandaki provinces, and at one or two places elsewhere.
The onset of the monsoon in Nepal is anticipated around June 13, although this date may vary by a few days.
The monsoon period in Nepal typically spans from June 1 to September 30.
Above-average rainfall has been predicted for Nepal during this year’s monsoon season.
Projections suggest rainfall exceeding the average by 35.4 to 55.4 percent in most parts of the country during the upcoming monsoon.
Regions such as the northwest Sudurpaschim Province, southeast Bagmati, central Madhesh, and central and mid-west Koshi Province are expected to receive 35.4 percent to 65.5 percent more rainfall than usual.
Similarly, the western Karnali, central Gandaki, and northeast Koshi regions are likely to experience rainfall exceeding the average by 35-45 percent.
Overall, precipitation in most parts of the country is forecasted to be higher than average by 35-65 percent.
