Opposition crosses 200-mark in early trends

NEW DELHI: In the early trends of the vote count, the opposition INDIA alliance is leading in over 200 seats, presenting a strong challenge to the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

As the counting continues across centers nationwide, these initial results indicate a closely contested battle.

The world’s largest election, held over seven phases across six weeks, saw almost a billion registered voters casting their ballots to choose a new government.

An alliance or party needs to secure more than 272 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha to form the government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is vying for a rare third consecutive term for himself and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

However, more than two dozen opposition parties have united under the INDIA alliance to challenge Modi and the BJP, aiming to overturn the predictions of exit polls.

As counting progresses, the opposition’s strong performance thus far suggests a tight race, with the potential for significant shifts in India’s political landscape.

The final outcome will depend on how these trends evolve as more votes are tallied.
