Sudurpashchim Chief Minister Shah resigns

DHANGADI: Kamal Bahadur Shah, the Chief Minister of Sudurpashchim Province, tendered his resignation to the Provincial Chief Najir Miya on Thursday evening.

Chief Minister Shah had initially planned to hold a vote of confidence during Thursday’s provincial assembly meeting at 3 pm; however, due to the necessity of creating a conducive environment to secure confidence, the Assembly session was postponed until 5 pm.

Following the withdrawal of support from the CPN-Maoist Center and CPN-Unified Socialist, Chief Minister Shah found it necessary to seek a vote of confidence.

Despite attempts to appease the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), Shah refrained from facing a floor test, fearing he might not garner enough votes due to the internal party dispute within the Nagarik Unmukti Party.

With two Nagarik Unmukti members openly opposing CM Shah, the parliamentary leader of the Nepali Congress (NC) feared he might not obtain the required 27 votes to retain his Chief Minister position.

In Sudurpashchim, the Provincial Assembly comprises 18 members from the NC, 11 from the Maoist Center, 10 from the CPN-UML, 7 from Nagarik Unmukti, 4 from the Unified Socialist Party, and 1 from the RPP. Additionally, there is one independent candidate in Sudurpaschim Province.

After CM Shah’s resignation, Unified Socialist is likely to claim the post of Chief Minister with support from the Nagarik Unmukti, Maoist Center and UML.
