Ichchha Raj Tamang sentenced to three years in jail and Rs 1.72 billion fine for money laundering
The Special Court has pronounced a three-year jail term and imposed a fine of Rs 1.72 billion on Ichchha Raj Tamang, the chairman of Civil Savings and Credit Cooperative Society, in a money laundering case. A bench comprising Chairman Tek Narayan Kuwar and members Tej Narayan Singh and Marari Bau Shrestha found Tamang, his wife Sirjana, and his maternal uncle-in-law Keshav Raj Shrestha guilty in the money laundering case on Sunday. Tamang’s wife, Sirjana, has been sentenced to one and a half years in jail, along with a fine of Rs 1.3 billion. Similarly, Keshav Raj Shrestha has received a jail term of one and a half years and a fine of Rs 256.5 million.
Film halls across country to shut down tomorrow in protest against taxation
Movie theaters nationwide are set to close down on Monday as a symbolic protest against the ‘impractical’ tax hike imposed by the government. The Film Producers’ Association has accused the government of levying taxes exceeding 33% in various names, following the implementation of value-added tax (VAT) escalation and corporate tax, and also introducing additional taxes contrary to the provisions of the existing laws.
Cancer contributes to 11.11% of total deaths in Nepal: Ministry of Health
Cancer accounts for 11.11% of total deaths in Nepal, as per the government’s information disclosed during a press conference organized on Sunday by the Ministry of Health and Population on the occasion of World Cancer Day. According to the cancer registry based on population data for the year 2020, the Ministry has revealed that cancer-related mortality has been over 40%. Dr. Rudra Prasad Marasini, Director of Epidemiology and Disease Control Department, shared that lung cancer and cervical cancer have led to a higher number of deaths. He mentioned that approximately 20,000 new cases of cancer are identified each year in Nepal. In 2020, cancer accounted for 16,629 deaths in the country.
RSP to launch nationwide pressure campaign for accelerated construction projects starting today
The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) commenced its nationwide pressure campaign today, aiming to expedite various construction projects across the country. The campaign’s inauguration took place at the Melamchi Drinking Water Project in Sindhupalchok, with Rabi Lamichhane, the party’s Chairman, set to lead the initiative. Concerns over the slow progress of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project have prompted the RSP to launch this campaign, highlighting the party’s commitment to pushing forward vital infrastructure projects. Lawmaker Sobita Gautam spearheaded the Sindhupalchowk-Kathmandu leg of the pressure campaign. A total of 20 lawmakers, along with the party’s general secretary, have been assigned leadership roles for various pressure programs as part of this nationwide initiative.
French League debut for Nepali football star: Sabitra ‘Samba’ Bhandari enters European stage
Nepal’s national women’s football team member, Sabitra Bhandari, known as ‘Samba,’ has kicked off her football journey in the French League. Samba made her debut for French club En Avant Guingamp on Saturday, marking the beginning of her venture into the upper echelons of European football. Samba started on the bench in the match against Bordeaux. However, due to inclusion in the team lineup, she got an opportunity as a substitute player. In the 75th minute, she stepped onto the field, becoming the first Nepali player to participate in a French League game. The match against Bordeaux ended in a 1-1 draw. This debut not only signifies a milestone for Samba personally but also establishes her as the first Nepali woman football player to compete in the French League.
CAN reveals Nepali squad for ICC Men’s CWC League 2 and Nepal-Canada bilateral series
The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has announced the Nepali squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 and the Nepal-Canada bilateral series. The Nepal-Canada bilateral series is scheduled to commence from February 8 to February 12, followed by the ICC Men’s CWC League 2, set to kick off from February 15 to February 24.
KMC mobilizes bulldozer to reclaim public land in Kathmandu
Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has to use the bulldozer to clear the encroached land in Kathmandu once again. On Sunday, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City initiated a bulldozer operation to clear encroachments on public land in Aloknagar, Kathmandu. Dinesh Aryal from the KMC police reported that the operation targeted structures built on public land in the Kathmandu-31 Aloknagar area, some without the required approvals.
