KATHMANDU: CPN-UML’s demand for six seats in the National Assembly has sparked discussions within the coalition parties, with a cautious ‘watch and wait’ approach being adopted.

However, amidst the deliberations, questions have arisen regarding the character and trustworthiness of the UML.

A leader, participating in the meeting, remarked, “The focus is on establishing a climate of trust. Let’s observe how the UML presents itself. Positive engagement might lead us to collaborate.”

The UML is facing a crisis following the loss of 9 seats in the National Assembly elections scheduled for January 25.

A leader from one of the coalition parties stated that the UML’s demand came after multiple attempts to break the alliance.

Rajendra Pandey, Vice Chairman of the Unified Socialist Party, stated that the UML’s move is an attempt to secure seats in the elections, casting doubt on their trustworthiness and legitimacy.

During the coalition meeting held in Baluwatar, discussions revolved around the UML’s request for 6 out of 20 seats, leading to a divided opinion among leaders.

According to sources, Madhav Kumar Nepal, Chairman of Unified Socialist Party, expressed skepticism about building trust with the UML.

In response, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba clarified that a decision on the seat issue would be reconsidered after observing UML Chairman Oli’s behavior and conduct in committee meetings.

Madhav Kumar Nepal remarked, “It’s known that Oli previously chaired two parliamentary committees. Now, he’s attempting to influence the National Assembly election. We must be vigilant. If such attempts persist, a strong alliance is imperative.”

Prime Minister Dahal responded, saying, “Let’s assess his character and performance in the committee meeting. If the transitional justice bill is finalized before the elections, some seats could be allocated.”

NC President Deuba elaborated on the matter, suggesting that if the six TRC Bills are finalized, collaboration can be considered.

However, he emphasized that the bottom line of the 6-seat demand would be a subject of discussion.

He stated, “I need to consult with my senior party colleagues. Oli’s approach is somewhat different. We should contemplate collaboration until the TRC process is completed.”

In the lead-up to the National Assembly member elections, suspicion looms among the ruling coalition parties regarding the UML’s adaptable approach.

However, Janata Samajwadi Party Chairman Upendra Yadav remains optimistic about fostering unity with the UML.

He emphasized the need to establish a mutual atmosphere of trust for this purpose and expresses dissatisfaction with the major parties only remembering their commitments once the work is accomplished.

Following a softened stance from Nepali Congress and Maoist leaders towards the UML, leaders from the Unified Socialist Party assert that major parties should address all concerns until reaching an agreement.

However, they have observed a growing trend of imposing numerous conditions if an agreement is not reached.
