Melamchi Drinking Water Project nears completion of crucial repairs in the aftermath of 2021 floods

SINDHUPALCHOWK: The restoration efforts for the Melamchi drinking water project have entered their final phase following the devastating flood in the Melamchi river in June 2021, which caused extensive damage to the project’s estuary area.

Senior engineer of the project, Padam Bahadur Kunwar, reported that 70 percent of the repair work in the estuary area has been successfully completed.

On Wednesday, a stakeholder delegation conducted an on-site inspection of the ongoing repair work at the source of the Melamchi water supply project in Helambu municipality-1.

Senior Engineer Kunwar affirmed that efforts are being made to ensure water diversion in alignment with the government’s specified targets.

Member of Parliament Amresh Kumar Singh, part of the delegation, emphasized the need for the government to prioritize the Melamchi drinking water project, ensuring a year-round water supply to the residents of Kathmandu.

Suresh Acharya, Secretary at the Ministry of Water Supply, reassured that maintenance work is being carried out to establish a sustainable water supply to Kathmandu.

The delegation, comprising key figures such as Balananda Paudel (Chair of National Natural Resources and Fiscal Commission), Judda Gurung (Fiscal Commission member), Kamalraj Shrestha (Director General of Department of Water Supply), and Zakki Ahmed Ansari (Executive Director of Melamchi Water Supply Development Board), collectively assessed the progress and future prospects of the vital Melamchi drinking water project.
